Types of Retaining Wall
Gravity retaining wall
These walls are massive in size, and they are called gravity walls because they stand on their weight to resist the enormous force of the land. While building this wall, the owner has to focus on the load and the base. Forces like sliding, overturning, or bearing must be taken into consideration during the designing process. Heavy materials like stones, concrete blocks, or bricks are used to construct this wall.
Cantilever retaining wall
These walls are constructed by using concrete, and most importantly, this wall needs to be reinforced to provide strength against the pressure. There are two sections of this wall – stem and slab. The slab is further divided into two parts – heel slab and toe slab. The heel section is located at the backfilling side, while the toe is located at the opposite. Compared to the gravity walls, these walls require much less concrete, but you have to be technical and design precisely to construct them.
Counterfort retaining wall
These walls are similar to the cantilever retaining walls because of those three similar sections – stem, heel slab, and toe slab. But the difference appears when it is about the support. Counterfort retaining wall is reinforced with special counterforts, which are made of concrete structures that connect the top of the stem with the toe slab. This shape reduces the possible bending tendency of the wall and supplies secondary force, which increases the strength of this wall to withstand additional pressure.
Mechanically stabilized earth walls
These are the most common retaining walls and are constructed on risky sites. These structures include a reinforcement element and a facing element embedded in the soil behind the wall (backfilling materials). Elements like concrete or segmental blocks, steel wire, etc. are used to made facing elements, while geosynthetic or metallic compounds are used to construct the reinforcing element. This wall is built to prevent the landslide or to support a huge landmass.
Anchored retaining wall
Cable rods or wires are used to construct and reinforce this wall. Those cables are driven deeper into the soil, and after that, the ends of them are filled with solid materials like concrete. Because of this, the wall is called the anchored wall.
